You should not start any sleep training approach before 4 months after your baby's due date. You don't want to sleep train newborns yet because your baby doesn't have a body clock yet. They won't sleep in consolidated stretches since they don't have a body clock. It's not that they don't know how to do it; it's that they cannot physically do it yet. So if you do sleep train, you are essentially asking them to walk before they have the muscles in their legs that help them stand. They cry a LOT, you cry a LOT, and you may feel like a failure.
Instead, prepare for the 4 month regression by focusing on finding a sleep schedule that honors your baby's sleep patterns for their age and establish nap and bedtime routines that promote independent habits. Having these in place before your baby turns 4 months will soften the four month regression and really promote longer sleep stretches.
